Yonge Street Animal Hospital is equipped with a surgical suite where we perform both routine and difficult surgeries. Most orthopedic surgeries are performed at our clinic by Dr. Alan Fruchter, a board certified veterinary surgeon. When an animal is admitted to the clinic for surgery, it will first undergo a through physical exam. Depending on the pet's status and age, pre-anesthetic blood work may be suggested. A pre-anesthetic injection is given to sedate the animal and to make induction proceed more smoothly. Animals are usually induced with an injectable anesthetic, however, each case is assessed individually and for some animals a decision may be made to induce with a gas anesthetic. Animals are maintained under general anesthesia with isoflurane, one of the safer inhalant anesthetics. When under an anesthetic, animals are not able to maintain their body temperature, and will often lose body heat; we try to minimize this loss by placing them on a re-circulating hot water blanket. Animals undergoing surgery are monitored continuously using a variety of parameters. Heart rate, respiratory rate and mucus membrane colour are taken and recorded every 5 minutes. We also have monitoring equipment including: (1) a pulse oximeter, which measures pulse rate and oxygen saturation of the blood, (2) a Doppler machine to measure blood pressure and (3) an ECG.Post-operatively, an animal is assessed as to what procedure for been preformed and whether or not an analgesic is required. |

Dental care is an important part of keeping your pet healthy and pain-free. We encourage you to take an active role in preventing dental disease by brushing your pet's teeth on a routine basis. Many animals eventually will require a professional dental cleaning. An animal must be under under general anesthetic for this procedure. A physical exam is performed to establish if a cleaning is neccessary and to evaluate the animal's health; pre-anesthetic bloodwork may also be recommended. A dental prophylaxis includes an ultrasonic descaling of tartar on the teeth, examination of teeth, gums and a search for any gingival pockets. If deemed necessary, teeth will also be extracted at this time. After the tartar has been removed, the teeth are polished and given a fluoride treatment. |
